Hatice Yalvac

for all Turkish people

‘Diabetes is very common in my family. I’ve often wondered why this is. It’s a problematic disease – your vision deteriorates, and it also takes an emotional toll. You have to check your blood levels every day to see if they’re stable, and you have to watch what you eat. Some of my relatives don’t take it seriously, maybe because they don’t know enough about the worrying consequences of this disease, and what you can do about this yourself. For example, by making changes to your lifestyle. It’s not clear why this disease is so common among Turkish people. HELIUS is helping to find out more about this. So that better treatment will be available for coming generations, and so that hopefully we’ll be able to prevent diabetes in the future. This is why I’m helping HELIUS.’
